Empower yourself by reframing a task as an opportunity!

We get to kill him!

I always knew this would cause the stock market to crash.

Weird how putting the emphasis on never is the only sentence that doesn't add implications.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

I think that's because it's the default emphasis you'd expect; someone denying any responsibility for a murder

I find it interesting that there are plenty of people out there that can intuit the change of meaning accurately, but have a really rough time describing what they are doing

How people learn English as a second language is beyond me. What a dumb language that those all have significantly different meanings

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Do other languages not have emphasis that changes meaning? Is this uniquely English???

[–] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

Certainly some do, I don’t believe it’s universal though? I think the other European languages do generally? I know nothing on the topic though

"Atop" and "afloat" have the prefix "a," meaning "on" or "to." "Atom" does not have the same prefix. It's just like that.

People always talk about using a time machine to kill Hitler, but what about William the Conqueror?
