Onigiri (お握り or 御握り), also known as omusubi (お結び) or nigirimeshi (握り飯), is a Japanese rice ball made from white rice. It is usually formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes, and wrapped in nori (seaweed). Onigiri traditionally have sour or salty fillings such as umeboshi (pickled Chinese plum), salted salmon, katsuobushi (smoked and fermented bonito), kombu, tarako or mentaiko (pollock roe), or takanazuke (pickled Japanese giant red mustard greens). Because it is easily portable and eaten by hand, onigiri has been used as portable food or bento from ancient times to the present day. Originally, it was used as a way to use and store left-over rice, but it later became a regular meal. Many Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets stock onigiri with various fillings and flavors. It has become so mainstream that it is even served in izakayas and sit-down restaurants. There are even specialized shops which only sell onigiri to take out. Due to the popularity of this trend in Japan, onigiri has become a popular staple in Japanese restaurants worldwide.

Onigiri is not a form of sushi and should not be confused with the type of sushi called nigirizushi or simply nigiri. Onigiri is made with plain rice (sometimes lightly salted), while sushi is made of rice with vinegar, sugar and salt. Onigiri makes rice portable and easy to eat as well as preserving it, while sushi originated as a way of preserving fish.

History

Prehistoric

On November 12, 1987, lumps of carbonized grains of rice, thought to be riceballs, were excavated from a building belonging to the Yayoi period (2000 years ago) in the Sugitani Chanobatake Ruins in Ishikawa Prefecture. The carbonized rice had traces which revealed that it was formed by human hands, thus it was initially documented as "the oldest onigiri." In subsequent research, it was thought to be steamed and grilled, rather than boiled like today's rice, similar to another dish called chimaki. Since then, it has been academically called the "chimaki-shaped carbonized rice lumps (チマキ状炭化米塊)".

Pre-Modern

Before the use of chopsticks became widespread, in the Nara period, rice was often rolled into a small ball so that it could be easily picked up. In the Heian period, rice was made into small rectangular shapes known as tonjiki so that they could be piled onto a plate and easily eaten. At that time, onigiri were called tonjiki and often consumed at outdoor picnic lunches

Modern

In the 1980s, a machine to make triangular onigiri was invented. Rather than rolling the filling inside, the flavoring was put into a hole in the onigiri and the hole was hidden by nori. Since the onigiri made by this machine came with nori already applied to the rice ball, over time the nori became moist and sticky, clinging to the rice.

A packaging improvement allowed the nori to be stored separately from the rice. Before eating, the diner could open the packet of nori and wrap the onigiri. The use of a hole for filling the onigiri made new flavors of onigiri easier to produce as this cooking process did not require changes from ingredient to ingredient. Modern mechanically wrapped onigiri are specially folded so that the plastic wrapping is between the nori and rice to act as a moisture barrier. When the packaging is pulled open at both ends, the nori and rice come into contact and are eaten together. This packaging is commonly found for both triangular onigiri and rolls (細巻き).

Rice and shapes

Usually, onigiri is made with boiled white rice, though it is sometimes made with different varieties of cooked rice, such as:

-Okowa or kowa-meshi: glutinous rice cooked or steamed with vegetables

-Sekihan: rice cooked with red azuki beans

-Maze-gohan: rice cooked with various preferred ingredients

-Fried rice

-Brown rice

The rice may be seasoned with salt, sesame, furikake, dried shiso flakes, and so on.

I know this comm gives landlords the shit they deserve and more, but I’m looking at houses and sometimes I forget how housing as an industry has degrees of evil. I will start fed posting if I go any further

Everything semi affordable is an iNvEsTmEnT oPpOrTUNiTY

last D&D session the DM almost killed a party member but was foiled because it turns out one of our party members had never spent their gold and was able to afford a high level spellcast. Faerun's healthcare system be like.

Seriously though you would think supply and demand would bring the cost of those down a bit. Sure high level casters are rare but they get multiple high level casts per day there's no way any economy could sustain them making tens of thousands of gp with less than twenty-four seconds of work.

It's apparently mundane enough for some small percentage of spellcasting adventurers to grow powerful enough to threaten gods, so maybe society just deals with inflation by the constant casual apocalypses and wars in heaven resetting e everything like clockwork.

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

You would have to have some utterly ridiculous system where everybody agrees that these rare casters generate absurd amounts of value in a ridiculously small time window. So then you'd have entire nations who either force or coerce everyone into agreeing that those few people had essentially infinite purchasing power. That's the only way I could see it "working" but I'm sure you'd get some hilarious contradictions and disastrous side effects.

This is the kind of stuff I say that makes the guy I work with who DMs use only like a quarter of my ideas.

yoo I woke up and lost my will to live. Recent events:

cw: big s and long read

  • pouring my heart out to s/o who only heard "blahblahblah, where the $$$ gonna come from?", then spending time with s/o and realizing they need more saving than I do (s/o's family trapped me, I thought s/o loved knowledge like me. turns out, only stayed for the career prospect of six figures (research defunded, out of a career by guess who)). To add, we're long distance, and she's in town for a week, and is still acting distant. S/o don't gotta do a damn thing, we the ones taking them to/from home to apartment and back, showering them with gifts, and even still! always "What have you done for me... the past hour?? 😜" (Not blaming s/o, just that I am no longer able to venerate this attitude, due to forces out of my control.)

  • vegan activism falling on deaf ears (I don't blame anybody, because this realm by default supported animal husbandry, earlier than farming of the first crops: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_husbandry)

  • weak genetics from weak parents who only had me because they liked sex and earning potential $$$ (I don't blame them, likely were indoctrinated by their parents and societal pressure)

  • diabetes - insulin too $$$ and nah we ain't living a cripple - cancelling out all the healthy food through night sweats, increased cortisol and anxiety, neuropathy (I don't blame my body, I put it through keto 🤦‍♂️)

  • $$$1k shithole! German roach infestation from neighboring units and landlord assuming me filthy (too broke to be a hoarder!) diatomaceous earth and alpine wsg be damned! (I don't blame the landlord, this an old building. I don't blame the tenants, problems external their control seem insurmountable and that reveals itself through dirty dishes, trash everywhere, etc.)

  • preferring my hyperrealistic dreams (vegans, sex, etc) over reality, desiring the dream-reality confusion to intensify!

  • seeing the homeless near me sprayed out of encampments via oxygen tanks through the firefighting department (I don't blame the firefighters, following orders to put food on the table)

  • $$$ runs out soon, and since our family, friends, etc do not cherish knowledge > $$$ and willful ignorance, will be a burden no matter what (I don't blame anyone, this is just the fact of this realm. $$$ wins over all!)

Due to these factors, I can no longer cultivate joy, minimize suffering, or deepen my practice for knowledge, peace and love. Therefore, it is time to go, sooner than later.

My plan:

  • spend the week drawing the hot people (physical or spiritual) in my life

  • send my final bits of $$$ to friend, s/o, siblings ...

  • making an unlisted yt video to show to hundreds on sc to go out 24 hours afterwards, that includes the clip of Mugen from samurai champloo ep14 and katt Williams interview 37:40 club shay shay, with the description linking to my Google docs' regarding the world I envision as progressive, sustainable, and liberating for all beings (I'm a performance artist. I want my death to be a protest to animal husbandry, perpetuated by organized religion and capitalism)

  • exercise to the point of failure so that my bod can remain smoking hot beforehand

I experimented with the method already, it put me in a state of euphoria! Painless and peaceful. By all connotations, I'm blessed by the pursuit of knowledge, peace, and love!

If we make another comment here, it means Murphy's law! That would be disappointing :P

We think, therefore we are ♥️

Terminator has one of the most beautiful love scenes in the history of cinema

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I dunno there's that scene in From Dusk Til Dawn where Salma Hayek drizzles booze down her leg and foot into Quentin Tarantinos mouth

[–] HarryLime@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ew. I don't like that.

I wasn't joking. The scene in Terminator is an achingly tender scene between two people in love. Kyle had her picture, and it was his only comfort in a world of pain. He came back in time for her. It's beautiful.

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's fair, James Cameron is pretty good at a love scene.

Titanic is a classic, I mean what else can you say about it. True Lies is ridiculous and sexualized but like we're all in on it? It's weird to describe. Even the infamous Avatar hair sex scene is actually a little poignant and tender despite it's "cringe" or sincerity.

I liked Romeo + Juliet scene when they meet but thats got a lot to do with Shakespeare, like cmon he's the one doing the heavy lifting

Actually, the one that gets me is at the end of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at the beach house, after the whole movie, pretending that's how it happened as your last memory of your loved one is ripped away

A tip for making vinegarettes: thinly slice some red onion or shallot and let it quick "pickle" in whatever acid youre using before adding the rest of the ingredients

It adds flavor and texture to your salad and prevents raw onion breath

My days have consisted this week of wake up make lunch, drive mom to work, head to training study for 8 hours, pick up mom, drive home, eat and sleep. Gonna be like this for at least 7 more weeks before I'm done with this energy career training. Everyone real nice and I'm learning a lot right now.

I do need to hit up the gym more on the weekend and meal prep wash clothes etc. I might take myself out to watch sinners, think I have a free ticket on my theater account I can take advantage of. I'm in the need for treats that are free since money is tight.

finally got my gf to play Disco Elysium a while back but they got stuck on like day 2 or something. I know that's not supposed to be possible & even tried to help but couldn't figure out how to progress. Sinec then I even did a new playthrough of my own but it's been too long and she probably won't pick it up again :(

Might take college courses again and try to unfuck my life, what are some of the less evil industries out there?

The few industries that seem even remotely interesting to me are so insular: media, tech, creative fields of any kind, education.

I feel paralyzed because from my pov, everything is too competitive these days. So many hyper-competent employees and such a teeny tiny amount of jobs to go around.

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

I'm trying to get into the water industry and it seems pretty good from everyone I've talked to. Requirements vary state by state but in general community colleges offer everything you need. As long as you can do algebra and read you can do it

Sent in another fucking “reminder” email to this internship that ghosted me after an interview.

God, where the fuck do these types get off judging other people as unemployable yet I have to constantly remind them to do their damn jobs?

I have a seasonal job right now, so it’s not that much of skin off my nose, but it pisses me off on how we hear about how unmotivated gen Z is when if anything, it’s employers who are too lazy. Come on porko, wake up and make some jobs. We’re waiting.
