The Easter Rising was an insurrection, mostly in Dublin city, that lasted from April 24th until April 30th 1916.

The insurgents in Dublin amounted to 1,200 men and women from the nationalist militia the Irish Volunteers, the socialist trade union group Irish Citizen Army and the women’s group, Cumman na mBan.

The Irish Volunteers had been founded in 1913 in response to the blocking of Home Rule, or self government for Ireland by the Ulster Volunteers. The Citizen Army (with around 300 members) was formed during the Dublin Lockout of 1913 to protect strikers from the police. James Connolly afterwards directed it towards pursuit of an Irish socialist republic.

The Volunteers split after the outbreak of the First World War into the National Volunteers and the Irish Volunteers.

The National Volunteers, over 120,000 strong, led by Irish Parliamentary Party leader John Redmond, were pledged to support the British war effort and over 30,000 of them joined the British Army. The remaining 13,000 Irish Volunteers, led by Eoin MacNeill, were committed to keep their organisation intact and in Ireland until Home Rule was passed.

The Rising was planned in secret by seven men, mostly of the Irish Republican Brotherhood or IRB, who had formed a “Military Council” to this end just after the outbreak of the First World War. They were, Tom Clarke, Sean McDermott, Patrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly and Eamon Ceannt.

Their plans were not known to the membership of the Volunteers at large or to the leaders of the IRB and Volunteers, Dennis McCullough, Bulmer Hobson and Eoin MacNeill.

They had arranged with the Germans for a large importation of arms to be delivered on Good Friday, April 21st, but this shipment was discovered by the British off Kerry and its cargo lost.

At the last minute, the plans for the Rising were revealed to Eoin MacNeill who tried to call off the rebellion by issuing a “countermanding order”, but actually just postponed the outbreak from Easter Sunday to the next day, Monday.

The insurgents proclaimed an Irish Republic with Pearse as President and Connolly as commander in chief. They occupied positions around Dublin at the General Post Office (GPO), the Four Courts, the South Dublin Union, Boland’s Mill, Stephen’s Green and Jacobs’ biscuit factory.

Over the following week, the British deployed over 16,000 troops, artillery and naval gunboat into the city to suppress the rising. In the week’s fighting, about 450 people were killed and over 2,000 wounded.

The rebels’ headquarters at the GPO was bombarded into surrender, which Patrick Pearse ordered on Saturday, 29th April. However the fiercest fighting took place elsewhere, at Mount Street Bridge, South Dublin Union and North King Street.

There were also risings in county Galway, Enniscorthy in Wexford and Ashbourne in county Meath, but apart from an action at Ashbourne that killed 11 police, these caused little bloodshed.

Sixteen of the rebel leaders were executed, 15 in a two week period after they had surrendered and one, Roger Casement, in August.

Over 3,000 people were arrested after the rebellion and over 1,400 imprisoned. The Rising was not widely supported among the Dublin public and was condemned by the Irish Parliamentary Party and much of nationalist as well as unionist opinion. However, combined with other factors, such as the continued postponement of Home Rule, the growing casualties of the First World War and the threat of conscription, the Rising and its repression helped to increase the strength of the radical nationalists in Sinn Fein.

This party, which had not participated in the rebellion, was adopted as a vehicle by the veterans of the Rising and pledged to withdraw from the Westminster Parliament and set up an Irish one.

Sinn Fein went on to win three by-elections in 1917 and a general election in 1918, leading to their proclamation of an Irish Republic in January 1919 and the start of the Irish War of Independence.

I hate Epic Characters. Netflix is trying to get me to watch Suits by showing me how Epic the main guy is, in a scene where he recites some law from the top of his head. "Yeah I never went to college, but I taught myself law and passed the bar because I'm so smart and Epic." Same shit as the West Wing. The key to beating the Republicans is actually by being Epic and Smart and owning them like you're Lisa Simpson.

Also I dunno what show it is but its an animated show with the girl with long dark hair and square glasses who always looks disaffected and Epicly Owns everyone around her. I don't care if the Epic Character is saying something I agree with, its cringe as fuck. Just a complete self-insert scenario from the writer. Its like when you think of the perfect comeback in the shower to someone in an argument you had four hours ago, but then thinking that the comeback was so cool that you had to put it in your movie or TV show. Stop it. Nobody talks like this.

The reddit website, besides being a moral and intellectual tar pit, is now functionally unusable after the most recent redesign. Even when I put myself into the mindset of a profit maximizing tech bro idiot leech creature, I still cannot fathom how you could design a website that functions so badly both on mobile and desktop browsers.

Scrolling down the feed just repeats the same posts over and over, comment threads only show two comments (sometimes just one!) before cutting off and filling the rest of the page with useless bullshit. Trying to look at literally any image is basically a 50/50 coin toss whether it will be formatted so badly that it's illegible and also somehow fucks up the formatting on the original page so you have to reload at the top of the feed.

I feel like the programmers at Reddit must be like that pretentious chef from Pig, constantly telling themselves that they're successful to stave off the impending mental breakdown that comes from being a complete and utter fraud.

Working on a tic tac toe app, but finding it difficult to know if a player has won. I've generated every possible board combination, right now I'm paying a bunch or people in the global south 35 cents an hour to tag wether the game has ended and who won in each version. Then I'll train an image recognition algorithm on the dataset they generate. E-z.

Its kinda crazy to me the level people will defend family members, even when they start shit. Like I can understand wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt, but when they're admitting they started and kept it up, I really don't. They went out looking for a fight, and now want everyone's sympathy. They start fights constantly. I'm kinda done hearing about another failed attempt. stop doing stupid shit, please

Yes actually re-enacting the Wehrmacht or the US Confederacy is sus and I am judging people who do that, especially when they have a neat clean pressed uniform out of a propaganda poster and not the historically accurate "pants stained with shit from all the dysentary, no boots, no ammo, begging to surrender because my raggedy ass army of evil ate shit" loadout.

The only reason deng xiaoping isn't as iconic is because he didn't such a banger theme song like Mao Ze Dong's "Red Star in the Sky"

what is he suppossed to have? "lower stage of socialism enjoyer in the open financial markets" His name doesn't even sound that good to sing.

This is my contribution to the sectarian struggle of maoists vs dengists.

Common cultural misunderstanding. If a British person asks you "Sup?" they're not asking '[What']s up?'. They're actually asking "[Wilst thou] sup [with me on beans and toast this beautiful evening]?"

Every time I think "I should actually memorize the letters of the fretboard so I can think about which chords I'm playing" I remember that I hate the western lettering scheme with an unimaginable fury. Maybe if I just sat down and ground it out, I could get past the B# and E# inconsistencies, but in order to devote any attention to it I have to stop being so mad first.

Hookup app talkSo I've been getting a whole lot of unsolicited conversations on grindr that follow a pattern. I think they're either bots and/or some sort of phishing thing. The commonality is the phrase "What are your intentions on this app?" or minor variations, very generic photos that wouldn't look out of place in a SFW Instagram feed, and weirdly formal language for the rest of the conversation.

Am I being overly paranoid, or am I right in just blocking them instantly now? Is this a known conversation pattern?

Never forget that antisemitism was punished with the death penalty in the Soviet Union stalin-approval

Anti-Semitism January 12, 1931 Reply to an Inquiry of the Jewish News Agency in the United States Source: Works, Vol. 13, 1930 - January 1934 Publisher: Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1954

In answer to your inquiry :

National and racial chauvinism is a vestige of the misanthropic customs characteristic of the period of cannibalism. Anti-semitism, as an extreme form of racial chauvinism, is the most dangerous vestige of cannibalism.

Anti-semitism is of advantage to the exploiters as a lightning conductor that deflects the blows aimed by the working people at capitalism. Anti-semitism is dangerous for the working people as being a false path that leads them off the right road and lands them in the jungle. Hence Communists, as consistent internationalists, cannot but be irreconcilable, sworn enemies of anti-semitism.

In the U.S.S.R. anti-semitism is punishable with the utmost severity of the law as a phenomenon deeply hostile to the Soviet system. Under U.S.S.R. law active anti-semites are liable to the death penalty.

J. Stalin January 12, 1931
