I don’t see Explosions in the Sky mentioned yet but they’re definitely worth a listen.

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

Great recommendation. We Lost the Sea - Departure Songs is one of my all time favourite post rock albums as well.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Got to see them live and it was really cool how chill the crowd was. Standing room and everyone just quietly swayed to the beautiful sound.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

I was just scrolling to see if anyone had mentioned them yet. If you hadn’t, I would have.

[–] Typhoonigator@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Lemmy really needs a post-rock community. That's one of the reasons I can't quit reddit. The one there is just excellent.

[–] puppycat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago

be the change you wanna see in the lemmy :)

[–] blackbrook@mander.xyz 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Bach's Cello Suites. Maybe try Misha Maisky.

[–] death@infosec.pub 3 points 3 weeks ago

The Cello Suites and the Goldberg Variations for me.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

And his lute suites, too. Sublime.

[–] ananke@lemm.ee 11 points 3 weeks ago

Not knowing anything about your musical taste I'm just going to throw a handful of things out there:

Bill Evans Trio - Portrait in Jazz

Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 / Suite No. 2

Philip Glass - Philip Glass Solo

Alice Sara Ott - John Field: Complete Nocturnes

Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV

Beethoven's 5th, 7th, and 9th Symphonies. Really all 9 of them are great.

Debussy's Suite bergamasque (third movement is Clair de lune which you've probably heard before).

I hope you feel better soon.

[–] xep@fedia.io 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Really like Chopin's nocturnes.

[–] rouxdoo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Best calm-down music in the world. Love listening and playing them.

[–] LumpyPancakes@lemm.ee 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Oddball here. I like mod files and midi files :)

Booka Shade is also good.

Oh, and also Theatre Organ stuff if you have a subwoofer.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Used to love mod and MIDI files. I should see if there are communities for either

[–] shittydwarf@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

There is a whole album for Dwarf fortress that is just incredibly atmospheric guitar, give it a listen. Personal favorites: Strike the Earth and Vile Force of Darkness. They both slap so hard

[–] lemmie689@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 3 weeks ago

You could try The Endless River by Pink Floyd

From wikipedia

The Endless River comprises mainly instrumental and ambient music

I haven't kept up with David Gilmours solo efforts but I think his post-floyd recordings are in the instrumental genre.

[–] Interstellar_1@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'm an fan of Locke, but I love fan remasters.

[–] metaStatic@kbin.earth 7 points 3 weeks ago

if these trees could talk is always where my mind goes when thinking instrumental only

[–] Creativity@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not sure how to describe my instrumental music taste. Maybe engaging epic fantasy music?

My top 3 are:

  • The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks
  • How to Train Your Dragon soundtracks
  • Anything by Antti Martikainen - he's a composer who has a variety of albums in different music styles that range from orchestra to celtic to rock/metal. 'The Sound of Courage' is probably my favorite, followed by 'Sonic Savior'
[–] throwawayacc0430@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks

OMG how did I almost forget these existed. Thanks for reminding me.

adding it to the list of downloads

[–] Creativity@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Glad to help!

[–] H1jAcK@lemm.ee 6 points 3 weeks ago

I don't know how it'll strike your mood, but the Beastie Boys did an instrumental album, called The Mix-up, and it's very good.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 3 weeks ago

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber

[–] Jack_Burton@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Hans Zimmer. Add collabs with Lisa Gerrard and Klaus Badelt for Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean. Honestly, just go through the whole range of emotions and watch/listen to his Live in Prague. Start to finish it's beyond wonderful. His soundtrack to Madagascar has no reason to slap as hard as it does.

[–] Creativity@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

Seconded! Big fan of the Pirates soundtracks and the Gladiator battle music is excellent. I'll have to go dig up Madagascar's soundtrack since I have no memory of it.

[–] Aatube@kbin.melroy.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

been listening to oppenheimer recently

I need a list of good music to help me cope with depression. Thanks

try snail's house for instrumental stuff and porter robinson's nurture if you're fine with vocals! get well.

[–] whotookkarl@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Boards of Canada for some lofi nostalgia

Streets of Rage soundtrack, Sonic 1-3, donkey Kong country aquatic something is a killer

Commix - call to mind is some classic dnb, some lyrics but often looped and mixed to be more of just another instrument

Sasha - airdrawndagger, more ambient slower melodies

Tycho - dive

Anything by Philip Glass or John Williams

Cloudkicker - Beacons, progressive metal band instrumentation kinda like animals as leaders

2010 Toyota Corolla - 2003 Toyota Corolla is the new national anthem

Bohren & der club of gore for some slow noir jazz

[–] philycheeze@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)
[–] stinerman@midwest.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

Take Five by Dave Brubeck. You can't improve on a classic.

[–] ashenone@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

Are you opposed to music that uses vocal loops more like an instrument than as lyrics? If not FKJ is my go to depressed music, especially the concert from Bolivia.

Spokey Dokey by the SEATBELTS

And

It's Never Too Late by Tommy Emmanuel

Also

Lazy Place by Caravan Palace

And honestly anything by Stone Rebel

Edit to add: OVERWERK does EDM-ish mixes/covers of classical music. Toccata is really good

[–] MojitoMafia@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Mainly prog or math rock themed but I highly recommend the following:

  • Covet
  • Chon
  • Polyphia
  • Snarky Puppy
  • Khruangbin (very little vocals)
  • Domi & JD Beck
  • And So I Watch You From Afar
  • Animals as Leaders
  • BADBADNOTGOOD
  • Delicate Steve
  • Rooftops
  • Intervals
[–] insomniac_lemon@lemmy.cafe 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I'm not sure if these will help, when I listen to instrumental stuff it's usually just a (personal) productivity thing.

David Bergeaud (Ratchet and Clank (1) OST) (some of the other games too, but for me less so the newer ~~stuff~~ games that have more action-movie orchestral music) (listen also: Spyro OST, different type of groove)

On the other hand, Journey for Tuba - II. Ballad has that mystery/free-roaming sound at the start (listen also: Bully OST)

I also like radio.garden with my local NPR stations (2 channels, often classical and jazz, so if you want to skip news... not always instrumental though) also ouch. There once was Radio Riel (in Detroit, MI), but it doesn't currently work on garden, they seem to have changed names. You might want folk or reverie, depending on what's playing. (though is non-english voice an instrument?)

The Over The Garden Wall OST is good, but not all instrumental. I did find an instrumental version, so maybe? Also, this is an autumn vibe.

For more game OST stuff, maybe something from Oddworld (if you can appreciate the atmospheric without it seeming too dreary), or Tomba is more cheery. Maybe even the Sims (Sims 2 is cheery and complex, Sims 1 is simpler, also there seems to be diff music for PC and consoles).

You probably could also go even simpler than instrumental, for instance searching 'piano solo music'.

I'm really surprised Russian Circles hasn't been mentioned yet. They're a "post-metal" band according to Wikipedia, whatever the fuck that is, but their first album 'Enter is amazing.

Back in 07', I went to a record shop in town every few weeks and would pick up 2-3 CDs. In an attempt to find new shit nobody had heard of, before buying anything, I would check with the clerk to see if they had heard of the band. If they had, I went and put the CD back, if not, I'd take it home with me. 'Enter' came out just a few months before, and I was lucky enough to grab a copy. I wore that CD out before some assholes stole my CD wallet from my truck.

If you're out there, CD wallet thief, I've never forgiven you, and wish you many pains.

[–] gangdinesout@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Russian Circles is so good. I saw them live not long ago. Incredible show.. I def recommend catching a live performance if you have the opportunity.

Tool - Triad
Faith No More - Woodpecker From Mars
Star Trek II soundtrack
Batman (1989) soundtrack

Stick Figure (reggae) has some of his albums as instrumentals only on youtube. I can also say you might try listening to his regular albums. It certainly helped me get through a rough patch recently. I find his music and lyrics to be very uplifting.

Spiritual State by Nujabes

Nujabes was a Japanese producer that met a very unfortunate and far too early death in a car accident. His friends finished this, his final album, and released it nearly two years later. It's both soothing and inspirational to me, and one of my favorites to unwind and escape to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaM2i7ntCZk&list=PL6xZBaK9f7MQIgRs9rMFChF1kPe12_4gd

That should be a playlist, if not just tube "not all who wander are lost thile"

[–] finalarbiter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

This is kind of niche, but my work/study playlist is mostly Mick Gordon (probably best known for his work on the Bethesda reboots of the Doom and Wolfenstein games). It's hard to tie down to a specific genre, but could be described as somewhere between metal and electronica.

[–] majestic_flamingo23@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Animals As Leaders, Intervals, Scale the Summit. All instrumental metal bands

[–] NegentropicBoy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Try "uplifting trance" or "uplifting music" on youtube

[–] datavoid@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

Progressive trance and house are the masters of melody

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

The Brazilian by Genesis has always been a favorite of mine.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Big fan of We Lost the Sea, especially the album Departure Songs.

[–] oji@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago
[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Passacaglia by Bear McCreary from Battlestar Galactica is the first thing that pops to my head.
https://youtu.be/Y9CqU1aMqyg

The rest of the BSG soundtrack is incredible in this regard as well.

World of Warcraft has some of the best instrumental music out there in general though im not sure if it counts as instrumental as choir is often used. This recent orchestra rendition of Wrath of the Litch King expansion is incredible: https://youtu.be/DoRkjNKOe20
