The Poor People's Campaign was a march on Washington D.C. to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States that began on this day in 1968, just one month after the assassination of one of its key organizers, MLK Jr.

The protest was also organized by Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and carried out under the leadership of Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King's assassination.

After presenting an organized set of demands to Congress and executive agencies, participants set up a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall, where they stayed for six weeks in the spring of 1968.

Among those demands was a proposal for an "economic bill of rights" that included a commitment to full employment, a guaranteed annual income measure, and more low-income housing for poor Americans of all races.

"I think it is necessary for us to realize that we have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights…

When we see that there must be a radical redistribution of economic and political power, then we see that for the last twelve years we have been in a reform movement…

That after Selma and the Voting Rights Bill, we moved into a new era, which must be an era of revolution…"

-MLK Jr., in a 1967 planning meeting

How do people feel about Constantine? Specifically the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves, that is. My understanding is that critics at the time didn't like it, but I'm a big fan. I will admit I've never read the comics, nor have I ever watched the Constantine TV show or The Sandman. But on its own merits I think it's a very strong performance from Reeves - or at the very least it's a role well-suited to him - and an underrated gem of his career.

Thank you delivery driver, for dropping my bookcase right in front of me, damaging it in the process, then trying to shove the parts that fell out back in (while I'm telling him not to do that as it will cause further damage), doesn't listen, doesn't even apologize. agony

FORMER URUGUAYAN PRESIDENT PEPE MUJICA PASSES AWAY

José “Pepe” Mujica, former president of Uruguay and one of the greatest icons of the Latin American left, died on Tuesday (13) at the age of 89. Battling oesophageal cancer and an autoimmune disease, he was under palliative care and decided to stop treatment in January.

Mujica was a guerrilla fighter, imprisoned for almost 15 years during the dictatorship, seven of them in solitary confinement. After re-democratization, he governed Uruguay between 2010 and 2015, always faithful to a simple style. He donated 90% of his salary, lived on a farm and drove an 82 VW Beetle. Under his leadership, Uruguay advanced progressive policies such as the legalization of abortion and the decriminalization of marijuana. "You need to give meaning to life. Fight for happiness, not just wealth."

I started reading 'the sexual politics of meat' recently and it's good. it's been a while since I read academic writing that wasn't history/socialist lit so it's nice to stretch some other muscles. the concept of the 'absent referent' is really useful, not just in the context of veganism/feminism. it seems right up the alley of the citations needed guys when they talk about how the corporate media covers imperial warmongering and war crimes.

also I really liked this sentence, by far the most grad school thing I've read in years, "Could metaphor itself be the undergarment to the garb of oppression?"

One big bonus of dog having is you can just like.. say 'dog name!' And they'll come snugfle with you and will generally settle I'm and snooze with ya for a long while. Darby isn't about that. She waits until I fall asleep, nuzzles me awake, won't go away until she get scritches but also doesn't settled Coen upon receiving then and instead rolls around on or next to me. When she does settle in it's for an hour max or until I move so much as an eyebrow and she springboards off me. She's gonna.be 10 in a month and is still super kitten coded. We played for a good 45 minutes after a really rough worknday cause there was no way I'd have peace otherwise. I'm not complaining. She is cool af

Plasma center went pretty good today, thought for sure I'd be there forever but make it pretty early in the morning and there weren't any lines. My blood flowed pretty well and didn't feel any unusual pain so I'm pretty happy. Last time I went it was an 2 almost 3 hours to be pricked, guess with the new plasma clinic and new hours they doing things have speed up. Thought some woke thoughts as my plasma left me so hopefully the persons who get it get my brainworms.

We talked about what we'd all do if we won the lottery at work. A lot of people just want leisure and never to work, a couple wanted to open a Cafe, another person just wanted to paint for the rest of her life. I actually would probably still be doing the same job, it'd be nice to not worry about money anymore though!

Andor spoilers, relationship violence,

Okay so everyone made a big deal about that scene in Andor where Syril abuses Deedra, but like... she is killing a planet and gaslighting him, and he chokes her. I don't want to minimize relationship violence, but she has a body count larger than Hitler at this point and she has been lying to him for their entire relationship and she orders his arrest and firing upon a crowd she knows he's in. How the hell is the shocking bit his choking. Obviously that's bad, but he just found out she ordered genocide. Maybe I'm not neurotypical enough for this, but I think people are doing that thing where we act like direct acts that violate social norms are in a totally different and worse category than objectively more harmful acts that fit within societal norms and expectations.

Visited my grandma today and accompanied her to a meetup for elderly people organized by the local church, because my grandma was too anxious to go by herself. Since my grandpa died 6 months ago she's been pretty isolated so we convinced her she needed to get out and meet new people. That all went pretty well, the people were super nice, my grandma immediately started chatting with some of the other women there and she seems pretty excited to go again.

But hoo boy, those old ladies were intense about their board games. Like, they were patient with my grandma and helped her out when she didn't know the rules, but they were so fast?? I was 50 years younger than everyone else at the table but I struggled to keep up wtf.

@CanYouFeelItMrKrabs@hexbear.net I wanted to respond to your post but the mega closed!

c/dating postingnot me, but my (very) recent partner has extremely limited dating experience before me - they just turned 33 and i'm gonna be 32 in August, so both past our late 20s! it's very very early days but it seems chill and healthy so far, it's definitely something the more experienced partner needs to take extra care & conscientiousness around but every relationship is unique and poses unique challenges so it's just one form those challenges can take.

honestly there aren't real time limits on any of this, the "relationship escalator" and life stage discourse re: personal dating milestones are often very rooted in neurotypical ableism, heteronormativity/patriarchy, privilege around income stability and class, etc. people who are right for you will be open to your late bloomerness, anyone who is icked out by it or scared off is just an incompatible person you filtered out. you want to date people who are open minded so wading through folks for whom it's a dealbreaker does both of you a favor.

i wouldn't necessarily put it in a dating profile or lead with it on a first date, but when it comes up organically it's not something to be ashamed of or anything you should treat as a big deal IMO. exploring the reasons why you started later with someone you feel a connect with can also be a good way for them to get to know you and to build intimacy.

just be a cool interesting and kind person and things should eventually pan out for ya!

sorry i realize that was a lot of unsolicited advice/experience sharing around a pretty simple post lol, feel free to ignore my dumbass if you want clueless

I’m an old hand at gaming, living among avatars and high scores.

Lately, I’ve spotted invaders, ‘fake gamers’ polluting our sanctuary. They spout gaming lingo without understanding and claim to love games they’ve never played.

It’s maddening, but I’m here to help. Let’s expose these impostors, not to gatekeep, but to protect our passionate community.

Let’s keep it real, folks.

Asking someone to rate their favorite Dark Souls games can determine if they are a fake gamer.

Kingdom Hearts and Paper Mario fans are considered indicators of being a true gamer.

Gamers love wearing unfunny shirts, which are a defining characteristic of gamers.

Strategies to identify and deal with fake gamers include observing their gaming knowledge and skills, engaging in conversations about specific games, paying attention to inconsistencies, and seeking validation from experienced gamers or gaming communities.

I’ve been exploring the concept of ‘Fake Gamers,’ and it’s intriguing to see how they’re identified, from a lack of genuine gaming knowledge to their choice in Dark Souls games. Recognizing signs isn’t always easy, especially when gaming jargon understanding is at play, but there are subtle giveaways. Insincere praises for Dark Souls 2, a game often critiqued by seasoned gamers, can be a red flag.

Identifying imposters is challenging, especially if they’ve armed themselves with a superficial layer of gaming knowledge. They might know the latest games, but probe deeper, and you’ll find a void. Ask about classic titles or complex gaming mechanics, and their answers often betray a lack of depth.

Often, fake gamers seek social validation, using gaming as a status symbol rather than a passion. They’re quick to flaunt their ‘achievements’ but are absent from in-depth discussions about game design or narrative nuances.

True gaming isn’t about exclusivity; it’s about shared passion and camaraderie. Let’s foster a space that welcomes novices and veterans alike, a place where authenticity isn’t questioned but celebrated.

What do they even teach people in business and leadership schools?

Every competent boss or manager I've had were people with education and experience in the field they're working who ended up in a leadership positions through circumstances. Every time I've worked for someone whose passion is "entrepreneurship" or running a company, it's a complete clown show where everyone is in a constant state of confusion.
