Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Please do this. It would be so funny.

[–] Samsuma@lemmy.ml 12 points 10 hours ago

Come on, live up to the "art of the deal". It's double or nothing (as in no trade at all).

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 15 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I need the xhs analysis on this. The only reason I can think of for this is that the American ruling class is simply not very bright.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 10 hours ago

It's honestly bewildering why anybody would think this is a good idea, yet here we are.

[–] LoveWitch@hexbear.net 29 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Lmao Europe won’t be able to buy gas from the US either.

2050 climate goals will be reached well ahead of schedule, folks.

It's been hilarious seeing European libs say that the EU should copy China's strategy of reciprocating and ignoring Trump until he caves, truly believing that they have anywhere near the leverage or spine that China has. che-laugh

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

It's even more hilarious: they know China is producing everything they use but still think EU is some kind of economic powerhouse instead of parasite renter economy it is.

[–] carpoftruth@hexbear.net 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

hey poland has really stepped up production of screen doors to support the european push for more submarines

There is a word game in Polish about gliders being made from glass (szybowiec/szyba) and tank tracks from caterpillars (gąsienica) and this is how out military industry looks.

Modern economic theory is sitting down and watching The Sopranos.

[–] WIIHAPPYFEW@hexbear.net 16 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

80 years in da American sphere of influence. I wanted soft power, but I compromised. I tied myself to their economy instead.

I wanted an EU army. But I compromised. I converted some farmland into US outposts. You see where I’m goin’?

That disloyal piece of shit Britain’s colony- I can’t even say its name- taxed our imports. And what did I do about it? My weakness.

Sometimes I think it’s in my Charter for Fundamental Rights. My economy took shit from the ‘merigans the minute WWII ended.

zelensky-pain Come on, the fuck you talking about?

The chicken tax. That’s MY fuckin’ legacy.

…No more, Vovka. No more’a dis.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 4 points 10 hours ago

I had no idea the EU is ran by the Shah of Iran.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 4 points 10 hours ago

Tariffs and cunnilingus, this is what got us here.

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 12 points 14 hours ago

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 27 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Do it coward. Seriously, please do it. This might bomb Ireland's economy but it's probably the quickest way to get American corporations out of the country, short of revolution

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 4 points 11 hours ago

Shannon Airport would be vaporised by a DongFeng hypersonic missile by June 3rd if he did this

[–] HelluvaBottomCarter@hexbear.net 54 points 17 hours ago

His friends and family are loading up before the long weekend. He'll walk it back by Monday and then they'll all sell on Tuesday.

[–] pinguinu@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Wonder if this will turn the EU away from the US or the exact opposite. I would think the exact opposite

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 14 hours ago (4 children)

I'd argue that the liberal world order is having its Sino-Soviet moment. If Trump actually does this, the EU will have little choice but to increase trade with China to keep their economy afloat. The trans-Atlantic rift is widening by the day, and Europe does not have many options left.

[–] replaceable@hexbear.net 19 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The difference is that europe is ruled by a bunch of compradors, publicly they will condemn US but behind closed doors they will fold and their foreign policy won't stray 1cm away from washington line

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 17 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The problem there is the growing political unrest across Europe, as the material conditions continue to decline it's becoming harder for them to keep a lid on things. A huge cost of living increase will have major political consequences.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah but looking at them, they would prefer to lose to an open fascists than to move a single inch from their political line. Those consequences would not hurt them personally, even in worst case they will just cash in their comprador money and move somewhere. It's modus operandi repeated many times before.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 10 hours ago

That's what I expect will happen, open fascism is the most likely path for Europe at this point.

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 27 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

The trans-Atlantic relationship had the unfortunate coincidence of having the word trans in it, so the new US regime had no choice but to consider it woke. too-woke-1

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 13 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

God I hope he does it, but the problem is he flip-flops every fucking week.

[–] QuillcrestFalconer@hexbear.net 15 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 17 points 16 hours ago

Oh hell yeah

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 10 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

Is it even questionable at this point whether or not he's taking strong recommendations from someone whose end goal is to destabilize the US, or even the west as a whole?

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 16 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think there's anyone at the wheel at this point. The Trump administration is littered with complete buffoons, led by the biggest, wettest buffoon of them all. The people with the most power are genuinely just extremely stupid and they will not listen to the few competent ghouls remaining. The country is run by failsons, senile geriatrics, tech bros, FOX hosts and WWE wives.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 7 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think there's anyone at the wheel at this point

Is this the best outcome we could've hoped for?

[–] bobs_guns@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 7 hours ago

I would've liked a situation with less border violence and genocide, but maybe it was too much to ask.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 5 points 11 hours ago

It's a ship's bridge full of morons trying to turn full force into an iceberg whilst the rudder has a thousand more slightly less moronic civil servants, advisors, and economists trying to steer it slightly off course into the "1000 year reich" ocean

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 12 hours ago

The wealthiest would benefit, either way, as far as I can tell. I'm just kind of clueless what the plan is, when the food runs out in the bunkers and the "winners" have eaten each other and their own family until one remains, unless they've already somehow achieved space colonization and somehow hidden it from the whole world (I don't believe this, btw).
