"I just told her I didn't respect her as a competitor," Navarro said of the exchange, per AFP. "I think she goes about things in a pretty cut-throat way. It makes for a locker room that doesn't have a lot of camaraderie, so it's tough to face an opponent like that, who I really don't respect."

"She told me she doesn't know how I have a lot of fans," Zheng said. "It looks like she's not happy with my behavior toward her. If she's not happy about my behavior, she can come and tell me. I would like to correct it to become a better player and a better person."

Zheng clarified that she wasn't upset by Navarro's words. "I'm glad that she told me that," Zheng continued. "I will not consider it an attack because she lost the match."

this is one of three times a US tennis player has acted like a sore loser in the past several days:

Danielle Collins scratches her match due to "injury" as she was losing. After her Polish opponent congratulated her on her career, Collins calls her "insincere" before walking away. She then played doubles 2 hours after her supposed injury.

Coco Guaff argues with chair umpire after losing to Croatia, says "this always happens to me" while crying. (i think some people are debating if her gripe was somewhat fair, but i feel like implying the judge is always out to get you is definintely doing too much. at least she didn't disrespect her opponent 🀷)

lmao holy shit i though the comment in the video was like a joke or hyperbole 😭

honestly i already just assumed most of the US team are nepo babies whose parents afford top of the line private training

[–] Justice@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 1 month ago

Well, it's tennis, so yes

But also generally yes for other sports

It's going to of course be incredibly rare for a teen or early 20 year old, the peak for a lot of these sports, to come from poverty and compete at the Olympics. It requires training from young childhood that parents in poverty simply cannot afford, proper nutrition to ensure the kid grows up as healthy and strong as possible, guaranteed free time especially as they hit later teens and 20s the ability to never need to work a job, and other stuff like buying the best and proper equipment, travel costs to compete, etc.

Maybe someone should tell the hogs if they want to win all the gold medals they gotta provide the basic needs for every citizen and offer fully free, government sponsored training for the most athletic kids to get to the Olympic level.

We tried to create a society of super elite athletes and, oops, we got communism! Oh no!

[–] iie@hexbear.net 53 points 1 month ago

that should be an automatic loss

[–] EmoThugInMyPhase@hexbear.net 51 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Maybe she’s sad that her dad will probably be shot one day

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 84 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The nationalism among the US population is absolutely insane right now and the only people that can see it are communists. Even a chunk of the people calling themselves anarchists are incredibly nationalistic.

Combine this with the literal infantilisation of the population that has been deliberately performed turning them all into overgrown children and this behaviour is the result. They pick up their ball and stomp off home when they're losing because they can't process anything other than the notion that they should automatically win.

Americans aren't good at sportsmanship and suck at losing.

Australia has this problem too.

wojak-nooo good sportsmanship is a communist plot!!

[–] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 35 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They're gunna try and character assassinate Pan Zhanle for winning the 100m free the same way they went after Sun Yang. Australians think they own the pool

Edit: probably better to say they are already going after Pan in the same manner, but my man's unflappable

I don't remember this many news stories about bigotry and poor sportsmanship in past olympics, is it just me?

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 48 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

Maybe something has changed, but if it's anything I think it's just the fact that it is now easier to push back against the propaganda of the west, or people have gotten better at it.

"The USSR women are so roided up they've become men" was a common accusation back when the soviet union still existed. That and stereotypes of children being driven like cattle and grown in vats, as if the US is any better

no idea, i imagine it's not really something western mainstream media would report much on, i only found out because i'm following that chinese netizen tiktoker

i wouldn't have even known there were two more examples if i didn't lose the video and try to find it again by searching "american tennis player sore loser" just for three different cases from the past week to pop up lmfao

[–] Barabas@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

I think we've been reaching a fever pitch for far right nationalist movements in a lot of the "west" fairly quick over the last couple of years, notable that the big whiners all have a openly anti-immigrant nationalist party either in power or as the opposition.

Consider that there are two boxers in the Olympics that were banned by the IBA, but only the one that knocked out the Italian one is a news story.

Holy fuck, America, please, at least one American actually, can't ask it of everyone, have a shred of dignity and or self respect. Like, damn, you know the image that's been projected pretty much for.the last decade had been of a pathetic whiny dysfunctional adult baby? I'm Canadian and I can see that internationally America is that 4chan co-worker who you have to humor cause of his mass shooter energy who is almost 40 and won't shut up about bakugan. Just absolute unstable losers, the kid at the playground who realized he could keep being cringe if he was super violent and would keep Naruto running well into high school cause he hospitalized a kid in 2nd grade for saying Mankey wasn't the best pokemon. The energy of the absolute worst dweeb who became a permanent Wal mart employee who lives at home until 50 but thinks they're hot shit cause they run that electronics section with an iron fist. Fuck America and fuck Americans, nation of redditor danger geeks. A country of punishers

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 67 points 1 month ago (24 children)

who is almost 40 and won't shut up about bakugan

Like half the trans women here (and like 30% of the site) just got hit with the wildest of strays

No idea what that is and I'm not looking it up. blob-no-thoughts

If we're talking about the Olympics, Simone Biles and Suni Lee seemed pretty cool and had good sportsmanship

[–] mar_k@hexbear.net 54 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

yeah i honestly really love simone, especially with how open she is with mental health struggles

a lot of reactionaries including JD Vance called her "weak and selfish" and practically acted like she committed treason for dropping out of the 2020 olympics due to mental health. her anxiety literally caused her to lose control mid-air and almost not land on her feet, which could've easily left her paralyzed

after winning yesterday she posted a "mental health matters" thing with her meditating before performing. she said she'd been "shaking" from anxiety at the olympic village, and went to therapy hours before getting gold. genuinely felt inspired hearing how she overcomes anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma from sexual abuse (larry nassar, the US gymnastics team' doctor who had assaulted over 200 women and girls)

[–] IzyaKatzmann@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

mad respect to her, thanks for sharing

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

If you look at her Wikipedia page, it uses three different sources for hateful comments in "Russian state-owned media", and nothing dedicated to stuff at home...

[–] mar_k@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

insane, she was literally being attacked on fox news while the deputy AG of texas called her a "childish, selfish national embarrassment" and the lieutenant governor of NC called her a "weak little gymnast" and a "quitter." charlie kirk straight up called her a "selfish sociopath and a shame to the country" while conservatives ran headlines like this:

The Olympics is the highest level of competition and takes a ton of training and talent to even be considered eligible even if you’re a rich brat like this yank. It would be a different situation if the Chinese player was cold in every situation, but who wouldn’t be cut throat DURING the match?

[–] Teekeeus@hexbear.net 47 points 1 month ago

You can see where the israelis get their attitude from

THEY TRIED TO WIN A COMPETITION ;_;

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 41 points 1 month ago

The global South is getting better at gaming the Olympics system and its making the west piss and shit and maybe cry a little bit
