I think the people who call Hallmark's mass-produced boilerplate Christmas movies fascist propaganda are onto something.

[–] utopologist@hexbear.net 54 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I live with an elderly person who watches only these movies and cable news, so believe me when I say that they definitely feel like the kind of media that would be on TV if the Nazis had succeeded in WWII

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes the nazis loved very in-offensive quaint nuclear family landscape settings. Movies that had a “deep message” and “too artsy and abstract” as part of cultural criticism was seen as part of judeo-bolshevism modernism.

I can’t help but wonder, do gamergaters not realize that Adolf Hitler would probably hate most vidya/anime?

Like call me basic but it’s pretty obvious my favorite anime is Dragon Ball. It brings me satisfaction knowing the nazis would hate it.

Feels like Hallmark Christmas movies are a dying breed of neoliberal propaganda from the 90's.

[–] videogame@hexbear.net 54 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Love that he included the 70s in this. Famous era for optimistic, apolitical movies with no sexual or racial themes.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 38 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Read some Marvel from the 70's people were scared as fuck it was the end of the world because of the oil crisis and turmoil in the middle east and it made it's way to comic books.

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 30 points 2 months ago

And we were constantly afraid of being atomic bombed

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

The first Gundam is from that era and Newtypes were portrayed as psychedelic world conscious emphats that would bring a better peaceful world. Basically the OG “the kids are alright”/“Zoomers will save us”

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

Og? That's what hippies thought they were as well

The eternal boomer

“I miss being a kid and therefore we need to genocide the undesirables!” Like that’s it, that’s their underlying villain origin story; they became adults and miss being a kid. Literal disney adults, literal disney adults are running circles around us in politics and the culture wars. It’s so humiliating we’re losing to THAT!

And the FUCKING 70s? That decade sucked ass. I wasn’t there but my dad most certainly was.

[–] blame@hexbear.net 37 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Counterpoint: People would regularly forget their children when leaving on vacation and their children would have to go to war with local crooks

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

then the children would get their annual christmas handshake from the future president a-little-trolling

[–] SpookyGenderCommunist@hexbear.net 35 points 2 months ago (6 children)

OK, but the 90s was peak time for "Racism is over :)" media???

Anyone remember this

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago

Yes the 90s is definitely what I associate with the “we archived everything” “we fixed racism” and “I don’t see color/I am a friend to all humans” or the “why are black people still upset about what happened xxx years ago?”

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I had to watch this in school agony-consuming

What the fuck James Earl Jones was in this

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Then by their own logic, they’re the ones that did the race baiting. 4chan, facebook and the underlying Amerikkkan hivemind decided “hey we want racism back!” (Not that it ever ended.)

We didn’t stop being color blind, they did and we simply had to as well.

Beethoven

Dog can't talk

Nobody shrinks

Nobody grows giant

No Robin Williams

Dog can't even play basketball

Fuck this shit, I refuse to believe anyone is nostalgic for Beethoven

EDIT: I looked up the plot because I couldn't remember what even happens in this piece of shit movie, and the moral of the story is "animal testing bad" which is so funny because you know these hogs would be baying in a fury if you directly said that to them.

[–] Siobhan@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago

The fact it fucking got sequels always amazed me

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Dog can't talk

What? I never watched this movie, but it used to be on TV a lot. The dog doesn't even speak? Wtf is this movie even about?

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago (3 children)

They find a St Bernard and they name it Beethoven and he grows bigger than they expected and I remember nothing else about it

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

The slobber

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

St. Bernard's are already fucking huge. One time my friend mistook one for a bear, said it looks like there's a bear in the house, the person living there said 'oh! That's Buster!' Friend the asked 'what's a Buster?'

Buster was cool as hell

[–] Tiocfaidhcaisarla@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

'what's a Buster?'

Also known as a

scrub

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Like, big for a Saint Bernard, or big in general? Because if you didn't know a St Bernard would be big...

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

It's not like, Clifford

This is recycled 1950s nostalgia based on media for a new generation.

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago

I have heard multiple boomers cite Leave it to Beaver as if it's a documentary madeline-deadpan

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Same energy as ~~Sargon of Akkad~~ Carl of Swindon saying that Western Civilisation peaked with Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago

I didn't like the song when a black man sang it because black people scare me. Then some white boys from the suburbs did a cover for it and I could feel my roman ancestors smiling down on me from heaven.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 27 points 2 months ago

the propaganda was so much better back then!

If 90s Animal Movies were thrash bands Beethoven would be Anthrax. That's some below Homeward Bound respect. To even pretend to be in the same realm as Air Bud is just hubris

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Where’s that chapo bit?

They literally reminisced about some proleslop film and thought “yep, 75% of the world’s population needs to die because I like this movie!”

Their brain is a dog’s brain.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago

Dogs are nicer at least.

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I liked it when the Jack Russell Terrier bit that guy in the balls. America doesn't make gratuitous nut violence anymore
