This may come off as playing "devil's advocate" but I promise it's not.

One thing I do hate about living in a car oriented culture is I am always a bit paranoid I'm going to be involved in some horrible accident that kills someone. You can be a totally responsible driver and some shit can still go down out of your control.

[–] dragongloss@hexbear.net 37 points 5 days ago

Balanced take, I am a hyper vigilant and defensive driver and this my biggest nightmare.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 23 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Driving is probably the most stressful thing I do. 80% of that stress comes from fearing I might inadvertently kill a person or animal. 20% comes from that car being the most expensive thing I own and knowing any major repair would isolate or bankrupt me.

Transitioning to ebikes was as mentally healthy for me as becoming a hiker. Instead of my commutes being the most stressful part of my day, I get to watch nature and do fun little puzzles navigating to my destination. The only stressful parts are when I have to cross a road.

Sameeee :|

Tbh I'm kinda sus of anyone who actually enjoys driving or doesn't take it seriously (likee family members who put on fuckin Netflix slop on their phone while they drive aaaaaaaaa treatler), at least to some degree :/

Some of the worst ppl I know are car guys lol

20% comes from that car being the most expensive thing I own and knowing any major repair would isolate or bankrupt me.

One of my friends was rly stressed out for a while cuz the only car they had and could immediately afford was this rly RLY shitty truck they got from a family member. Being poor in the US (and not just the US ofc, but they have some unique ways of torturing poor ppl) is...... driving to work everyday in the winter, cold as fuck cuz your car's heater doesn't work, maxed out on work absences before a computer fires you not knowing if today is the day your car breaks down randomly, possibly putting you in an extremely dangerous situation with traffic, and if you'll have to skip eating for a lot of that month cuz you just had to pay an enormous amount of money in repairs that also won't even last :|

I can't remember what happened exactly but at some point, on their way to work, the truck mechanically failed suddenly in such a way that they lost control and went into a snow bank :| Am just glad it wasn't worse and they didn't get hurt xwx

Then they needed another car and they got fucked over yet again by a used car dealership selling them a car with a fatal hidden problem that went to the scrapyard in like a few months agony-consuming

Incredible stuff, an entire country of parasites and cops sucking the blood (metaphorical..... wait also literal cuz my friend had/still has to sell their blood :|) and just beating the shit out of every other person (metaphorical and literal) in an endless variety of ways

Ugh xwx catgirl-flop, even my car is fucked rn and basically undrivable I'm so tired of these things so fuckfinvi ivdiosgumypillow-stare

Also instant gulag for the car guys who modify their cars to be extremely loud on purpose

owned for the car guys who do that and then intentionally speed up while they go past you rly fast while you're walking and scare and deafen you

Oooooh and wall for ppl who somehow manage to cut you (pedestrian) off at crosswalks with their car cuz they refuse to wait even 15 seconds for you to cross (this happened to me a few weeks ago, I even had the symbol that said I could walk but they turned right in front of me within like a fuckin few meters at most while I was crossing, literally while I was staring them down cuz I got this feeling they were gonna do it lmao)

Cars just inspire the most repulsive antisocial behavior, fuckkkkkk we need to just put them all in a giant pile and set them all on fire

Omg....... and there are few worse feelings than being harassed by ppl in cars at night while you're just out walking, it gives them basically total power over you, just lock all those fuckin creeps in the cars in the pile to roast honestly

Sry I'm yapping so muchhhhh but I FUCKING HATE THESE THINGS SO MUCH, HATE, HATE, HATE no-mouth-must-scream

I always liked driving. It extends to anything similar… I would also want to drive a minivan, a bus, or a train. Just tickles something right in my brain to be in control of a machine. I like getting the flow of it, feeling like it’s an extension of my body, and using my spatial awareness and momentum.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 23 points 5 days ago

Yeah, it's especially fucked because despite the fact that cars are basically a necessity in most parts of the USA, the infrastructure to use them is fucked

Look at nearly any social media about a particular place and you see pretty much everyone acknowledging it

Potholes, crumbling sidewalks, dangerous intersections, you name it!

It's maddening to known that it'd be so easy to fix these and save lives, but they just don't!

This is why driving should be a professional activity, not a mass civilian activity. Similar to being the captain/pilot/conductor of a ship/plane/train.

[–] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Professional drivers still kill people. Train drivers in particular suffer this, and the trauma from it.

[–] MidnightPocket@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago

Yeah no shit. Just like sometimes Doctors kill people in surgery. The point is if it's a professional activity it happens less and for better reasons as well as the person who "does the killing" is well aware that it is a possibility that they signed up for by taking the job.

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 15 points 5 days ago

I straight up hate driving. My ADHD having ass cannot help but try to tease apart how to build a working man-portable gauss rifle while driving, and not only does it make it insufferable to ride with me driving because I'm always wobbling a little bit, but it makes me dangerous to everyone else on the road when I miss my medication. You know that driver that you go "I can't believe they just let everyone drive" when you see them drive, yeah, that's me. I'm not proud of it. I would 10000x prefer to bike or take public transit to driving, but my city has practically made public transit completely impractical to use on purpose, and the bike lanes are all super fucking dangerous bicycle gutters in my part of town.

In point of fact, MOST people suck at driving. Just think about how good a driver you consider the average driver to be. Wouldn't it be better to get the "average driver" off the road? Wouldn't it be better to let people like me have some alternative to driving around a steel sled at 35 mph?

[–] SeducingCamel@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

I hate that accidentally killing an animal like a squirrel is always a possibility meanwhile most people seem to not even care if they hit an animal with their car

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 70 points 5 days ago

I like the early 20th century depictions of cars as Moloch, the Canaanite god of child sacrifice. Time is a stupid flat circle.

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 63 points 5 days ago (6 children)

it's the kids own fault

If you ever find yourself saying these words. Stop. You're wrong.

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 47 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Well, it's my kid's fault for not knowing how to drift when I smoke his ass in Mario Kart 8

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 22 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yeah! Learn to snake, loser

[–] puckylinky@hexbear.net 36 points 5 days ago (1 children)

unfortunately those words i have heard uttered way too regularly

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 34 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I don't know how people can not understand the simple fact that children are not adults and cannot be judged as such

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 17 points 5 days ago

I think this is most commonly found in suburbians who think letting their kid go out of the yard with no adult supervision is throwing them to the wolves

[–] SuperNovaCouchGuy2@hexbear.net 20 points 5 days ago

"its the kids own fault"

  • common Zionist proverb
[–] Calmrade@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

Wish somebody had told me this when I was a kid. So much misery and suffering because of the shame and guilt I was made to feel.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

Drivers are advocating for themselves to have less agency than children.

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ok but what about when a 15 year old I was looking after wanted to play catch but didnt have a ball within arms reach, so decided to use his shoe instead and then threw his shoe too hard and got it stuck on a roof?

Like generally I agree but sometimes kids do awe-inspiringly dumb shit.

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Doing stupid shit is how you learn. It's literally integral to our development

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 6 points 5 days ago

God I wish he had learnt.

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

I learnt to not throw my shoes on a roof without ever doing it but I'm just built different

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 49 points 5 days ago (2 children)

"Yeah, I caused a horrible tragedy....but I'M the REAL VICTIM here! I have to feel bad about what I've done!"

God they're pathetic.

[–] puckylinky@hexbear.net 33 points 5 days ago

YOU WOULDN'T KNOW MY PAINS UNLESS YOU HIT A CHILD WITH A CAR!

no one understands me ..

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

Mindset of the average Amerikkkan soldier

[–] rhubarb@hexbear.net 31 points 5 days ago

Some people are really gifted at finding the real victim (it's themselves)

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 28 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I sob "this hurts me more than it hurts you" as I flatten a third grade class with my lifted F-350

[–] Lurker123@hexbear.net 12 points 5 days ago

Fake, you couldnt even know a third grade class was even there if you were driving a lifted f-350.

[–] Deadend@hexbear.net 27 points 5 days ago

People should drive with the fear that if they make a mistake they will kill a child and the potential horror that entails.

Bit idea: it's that Frankie Boyle skit about shoot and cry movies but for reckless drivers who run over children

[–] unwarlikeExtortion@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

The kid's own fault?

Now I'd ask what they teach in US driver ed, but I know that that's not a thing there. I wonder if they even have a "theory" exam where they'd ask you stuff like "What will you do if you see a child?" or "Do you have the right to run over anyone not on the sidewalk?"

I also love how they're equating a child's literal life with their own social standing and ability to command a 2-ton projectile on wheels.

[–] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago

The book we're supposed to read before taking any tests does say that drivers should do everything they possibly can to avoid hitting a pedestrian. Even if someone walks into the road right in front of you, you don't have the "right" to run them over if you can avoid it. Of course, that's not the mindset of many drivers.

[–] 3dmvr@lemm.ee 0 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I mean if a kid suddenly runs into a road its their fault, happens, they may not swerve or stop in time. Forget kids, a couple years ago I was a passenger when a dude looked both ways and then walked directly in front of our car and launched into the windshield in front of me, (thank god that shit held i had glass all over my leg but he didnt go through it) like it was definitely his fault and no avoding it, he walked out instantly infront of the car. I watched it in slow motion, could feel my mouth opening to say something as it happened, way too fast.
