He said they used AI to fake it. I don’t know if they did or not, but I feel like that’s going to be the new, “someone hacked my phone and posted that,” any time someone gets caught saying something dumb.

[-] squiblet@kbin.social 41 points 5 months ago

I've been thinking about that lately. Of course they'll muddy the waters. Trumps 'fake news' bullshit already has, where he acts like major news organizations just wholesale make up stories. The result of deep fakes will be what we already have, but worse, where MAGA types believe anything negative about Democrats, no matter how ridiculous it seems under analysis, and refuse to believe anything negative about Republicans, saying it's 'fake'.

[-] III@lemmy.world 18 points 5 months ago

Which in turn allows them to now, more strongly forever deny whatever they want.

So on top of not being able to convince them with facts, you also won't be able to convince them that the facts are facts... so then how do we pull these idiots away from the cliff's edge?

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 months ago

Let em jump? I mean, if auntie Ethel wants to cure her COVID with bleach injections and a UV light up the arse, I don't see what we can do to save her

[-] billiam0202@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

If they'd just stay at their houses and shut the fuck up, I'd say let them live in whatever false reality they want. Problem is, they're getting more violent and increasingly believing that they need to enforce their false realities on the rest of us.

[-] alignedchaos@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 months ago

Facts weren’t the answer for that group to begin with, so not much is changing for them.

[-] Machinist3359@kbin.social 24 points 5 months ago

The thing is AI voices are only good enough to trick most listeners. If you know what to listen for, or can dissect the audio professionally, it's trivial to fact check.

There has always been image/audio doctoring. Any reputable news source can reasonably identify these things.

[-] oce@jlai.lu 8 points 5 months ago

Until they train the AI against those artificats and it becomes undistinguishable. It either already exists or will soon, no doubt state actors are excited about the possibilities for foreign intelligence.

[-] Jeremyward@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

They do adversarial training with those tools. It begins to be an arms race between detectors and trainers.. 🫤

[-] lennybird@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago

The thing is, character matters. I have no doubt Roger Stone is capable of saying those things. Zero doubt.

If someone did this with, say Obama, would anyone believe it?

[-] agitatedpotato@lemmy.world 27 points 5 months ago

If someone did this with, say Obama, would anyone believe it?

Oh absolutely, off the top of my head I'd say 20-35% of America.

[-] billiam0202@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

You can't honestly believe that a significant portion of Americans would easily believe such a falsehood, Kenya?

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 8 points 5 months ago

Roger Stone has also previously claimed deepfakes for things he was recorded saying on video from a professional documentary crew: https://www.thedailybeast.com/roger-stone-claims-video-of-him-calling-for-violence-are-deep-fake-videos

He already cried wolf.

[-] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 135 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

"But it was AI" is the new talking point for the chucklefucks. Pathetic.

[-] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 36 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I have no problem believing Roger Stone advocated for assassinating two members of Congress, which is also why this is the type of situation where releasing deepfakes would be most effective.

So yeah, it's absolutely plausible this was AI generated, but Roger Stone isn't someone I feel deserves the benefit of the doubt.

[-] recapitated@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago

The worst part of the world today is that is a plausible denial. But, like other forms of evidence, if it's not proof positive but it is correct, it may be a strong lead to other information, and at best an invitation for witness testimony. (Not to imply that testimony is reliable)

[-] Habahnow@sh.itjust.works 13 points 5 months ago

And in this particular case, mediaite is in communication with the person that recorded this. In addition, they indicated that there were several other instances of Roger Stone attempting to get this done. Could he even be charged for this? I would hope so, especially if he actually took some steps to getting it done.

[-] Facebones@reddthat.com 8 points 5 months ago

Let's be real Republicans haven't faced consequences for what would get Dems guantanemo for a long time now. So it's all pretty moot.

So why hasn’t he been arrested?l already? Get on with it. If it was you or me saying this crap, we’d be in prison.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 62 points 5 months ago

This guy should be rotting in prison.

[-] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 56 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Dude has a tattoo of Richard Nixon.

he admired Nixon's resilience and that the tattoo was a daily reminder that "when you get knocked down, when things don't go your way, when you're defeated, you got to get up and fight again. It's simply that."

Of course he would talk about it, absolutely would do it too.

[-] NegativeInf@lemmy.world 33 points 5 months ago

Yep. Resignation in disgrace before you could be fired is absolutely getting up and fighting again. Even their fucking heros are massive losers.

A daily reminder that he can't see? Or is it a reminder to whoever is fucking him?

[-] Reality_Suit@lemmy.one 43 points 5 months ago

The Republican party is a threat to the US. Trump is a traitor. The people who can't understand that at this point have a mental illness. Fuck the corrupt Democrats that enable them through their policies and actions.

[-] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 44 points 5 months ago

Fuck the corrupt Democrats that enable them through their policies and actions.

Like what?

[-] mattw3496@kbin.social 42 points 5 months ago

I assume that the user that you are responding to was probably referring to Manchin, Sinema, and the various old school Democrats that engage in insider trading and the like and refuse to fix such issues in our laws.

In addition to the more extreme examples like Manchin and Sinema who exist as spoiler votes, the majority of the Democratic party also enable the Republican party by constant attempts to compromise resulting in a rightward Overton window shift. Because Democratic politicians refuse to confront Republicans when the latter refuse to engage in good faith arguments, agreements, and debates.

Outside of that, they also tend not use what power they have to do good. Like how Roe v Wade was never codified, even during times when Dems had control of the house and senate.

[-] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago

I completely agree if that's what OC was intending. It just seemed his/her comment contradicted itself, and I wanted clarity.

[-] Cruxifux@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Also the ratfucking farce that is the primaries. Along with all the smaller individual cases of corruption that both dems and repubs do constantly.

Did you just blame the treason for the Republican party and its supporters on the Democrats? Jesus fucking christ maybe blame the actual traitors? The Democrats could do more, sure, but that's like blaming the US for not getting WW2 earlier for all the atrocities of the nazis.

[-] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 5 months ago

I won’t blame the US for nazis, except Lindbergh and the other US nazis.

[-] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

They did blame the actual traitors. Multiple people can be guilty of different levels of ill. Republicans being disgusting doesn't magically make Democrats good, just the lesser of two evils. Notice how "lesser evil" is still evil.

That's important to remember, especially if Trump doesn't win.

It's like Republicans are the ones doing a school shooting, and Democrats are the Uvalde cops twiddling their thumbs outside the school.

[-] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Spot on, old chap

[-] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 11 points 5 months ago

One part of that paragraph is not like the other.

The people who can’t understand that make up around half of the voting body of the greatest military power of all time.

[-] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

More like 1/3, but your point still stands.

[-] Cruxifux@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

That’s why I threw the word “voting” into that one. But yeah, any way you wanna word it, shit looks grim.

[-] Sprawlie@lemmy.world 27 points 5 months ago

WHY ARE THERE ALWAYS TAPES?

😂

[-] trebuchet@lemmy.ml 20 points 5 months ago

In this case, it seems he was boldly talking about assassinating Democratic congressman in a public restaurant and someone recorded him.

[-] vinylshrapnel@lemmynsfw.com 17 points 5 months ago

They aren’t confessing, they are bragging.

The irony of censoring the word fuck on that shirt.

[-] shasta@lemm.ee 4 points 5 months ago

Yeah why censor "fuck" but not "Trump"?

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

So what's the line for conspiracy to X crimes again?

[-] Vespair@lemm.ee 10 points 5 months ago

Whoa, are you telling me that the hateful evil villain guy lied?

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

What I find interesting is that this is not being discussed much more prominently. A good friend of donnie's was talking - to a cop - about murdering Democrats. And not only are the cop and Stone not in prison, but it seems this story has already come and gone.

Even more interesting: I find no mention of this anywhere on the Denver Post, by the way....an outlet accused by the unhinged of being "liberal" all the time. And yet - they constantly skip over stories that put Republicans in a bad light.

[-] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago

It's legal to do this! If it wasn't Roger Stone would be in jail!
