Yes, there's more to it than that and it's quite stupid and also quite bigoted. Republicans don't need to know that. They didn't and won't read his book anyway.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 50 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Unless he’s a fascist republiQan.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 19 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That's the part that's wrong, not the gay part.

Um,that Q was for QAnon, not Queer, right? Or are you trying to say being queer somehow makes a fascist republican even worse?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Hahaha - no, its for Qanon.

Words is funny sometimes.

[–] MediumGray@lemmy.ca 23 points 4 months ago

Let's not jump to conclusions... he could be Bi.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 94 points 4 months ago (6 children)

When he brought up the issue with his grandmother — known to Vance as "Mamaw" — she replied bluntly: "Don't be a fucking idiot, how would you know that you're gay?"

When Vance explained his reasoning, she laughed.

"JD, do you want to suck dicks?" she said, according to the book.

So... 8 year old JD Vance instead wanted to eat pussy?

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 52 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

Considering not all straight women want to suck dicks, I don't think the desire to suck dick is a good determinant of whether you're gay or not anyway.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 36 points 4 months ago (2 children)

…… it’s almost as if there are subtle nuances to human sexuality that can’t easily be defined by how you enjoy your dick ….

[–] Delusional@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

Don't ever expect people who've been brainwashed to notice subtle nuances. Most of them don't even know their candidate is a conman and a rapist.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Especially when you can be both gay and asexual.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 14 points 4 months ago

Cool can you combine those into gaysexual

Also, if eight year old Vance brought this up with his public school teacher and they gave him the same kind of response (minus the "suck dicks" and "fucking idiot" parts), conservatives would absolutely lose their shit over "grooming"

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Considering his grandma followed it up with

"And even if you did want to suck dicks, that would be okay," she replied. "God would still love you."

He clearly didn't get homophobia from her.

[–] tlou3please@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Also, was this his grandmother saying that she knows that SHE'S straight because she wants to suck dick?

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

TIL J.D. Vance's mamaw likes to suck dicks.

Which is totally fine right? Unless he belongs to some sort of extremist group that base their identity around intolerance, racism and homophobia.. but that's just crazy talk! This guy could be the new VP!

[–] bolexforsoup@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

No it’s not fine because he is insinuating that it is a choice that can be logic’d into/out of

[–] ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (6 children)

I mean, for some people, it is. When you're exploring your identity, you don't always get it right on your first try. Just like there are people who are convinced they're straight that are actually gay (or bi, or pan, or what have you). Though that is far more common, largely because of the societal pressures to conform to heteronormativity.

But then, perhaps that truly is Vance's case here. Maybe he actually is gay, and his whole... everything is just him trying desperately to convince himself otherwise.

My first thought too.

[–] blarth@thelemmy.club 49 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Every straight person I’ve talked to says they knew they were straight very early on. This goes for me as well. There was a brief moment in my teen years where I asked myself if I might be gay. It lasted about two seconds. The result was negative. There was no way I was going to be gay.

If this dude “convinced” himself he was gay, well, I think he might just be at least bi.

[–] Wilzax@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

A lot of bi people just decide to only live as straight since they would rather not deal with the social stigmas of any degree of homosexuality

Without fail, another anti-LGBT Republican with stories about "sexual confusion" and "the temptation of same-sex relations" that all but confirm that they are queer and closeted.

A coworker of mine once tried to pick my brain on gay marriage say something to the effect of "people like you and I wouldn't be resisting the urge if we didn't know it was wrong". I had to pop his bubble by explaining to him that I had never felt the temptation to be gay ever in my life because I am straight, but if I really wanted dick I'd seek it out because sex is fun and I'll have it with anyone if think it will be mutually enjoyable.

He literally couldn't wrap his brain around the idea that I was completely willing to have sex with any person that struck my fancy, but that men were never even a consideration. He was experiencing the exact opposite.

Needless to say, he's still deeply closeted, but he doesn't bring up gay marriage stuff anymore to me because I think I gave him an ongoing existential crisis. I hope he figures it out eventually...

But statistically, once you're so deep in the closet that you've convinced yourself that everyone wants gay sex, and only "sinners" give into that urge, you're probably not in the path to figuring anything out. Unfortunately, these people always vote for Fascism, constructing the prison that they themselves will be locked in.

Grindr has a chance to do something very, very funny

[–] art@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago

Should we tell him? I think we should tell him.

[–] tlou3please@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago (2 children)

So, is he...

  1. Fundamentally misrepresenting homosexually as self delusion and a choice, or

  2. A closet homosexual in denial, like so many other homophobes

I guess they're not mutually exclusive.

Eh?? The unenlightened bigots are still going on about how being gay is a choice? That somehow choosing to be miserable and conform to a heteronormative would make the gay go away?! Only to later either break free of the brainwashing which led to conforming to an obvious lie of being straight or simply taking a one way trip out of this world. Stupid, fascist Republicans don't have much to offer but ruin and one big white world, drained of all its color. Hopefully, this November, we trounce these entitled fascists.

In my own personal experience as a child, I simply knew that I was different. I didn't realize until the hormones activated how different I was! Then again, I was able to reflect on that with something called 'reading about the experiences of others and trying to find points in common'. JD Vance likely had nothing but bigoted talking points screamed into his ears and he gave in.

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (2 children)

My problem with the core of the argument is that it wouldn't matter if it were a choice or not. I honestly can't find men attractive as a straight man so if someone else tells me homosexuality is a choice, I just assume they're actively making that choice one way or another.

[–] EatATaco@lemm.ee 6 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I'm a pretty good looking guy, and not being afraid of gay people, with plenty of exposure, I've had a few come on to me. I've even had one tell me he knows I'm straight and that the only thing he wants is to suck my dick and he would make it fantastic. I figure that with having the hardware and practice, they probably know a good deal about physically pleasing a man, so I've seriously considered it.

But like you, I can't get over the fact that I am just not attracted to men. Even when very drunk. Literally struck out with multiple women rather than taking a sure blowjob.

If anyone would have made that choice, being a horny and open man desperate for a blowjob with opportunity, I'd be a prime candidate. And I couldn't even choose to be bi.

I think he’s probably trolling in some way? Or maybe this is exactly what some conservatives want to hear, so that’s why he’s saying it. He seems to have learned exactly what to say to make people like him.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

This is the same guy who hopes everyone has forgotten that he called Trump "America's Hitler," so he could just be extremely stupid.

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I don’t think he’s stupid. Some people who grow up poor develop a talent for knowing how to ingratiate themselves to others. His changing opinion simply means that the target he wants to charm has changed.

It was part of his memoir written at the age of 22. He was trying to sound cool and clever and add color to his grandmother's character because she asked a 6 year old if he wanted to suck dicks. I wouldn't think too hard about it.

It’ll be game over for him if he starts to vogue while on stage with Trump.

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 months ago

How to out yourself without realizing it 101.

I'm going to guess he also grew up in a highly religious household.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Right. So self-loathing queer person that has allowed his disgusting, toxic, religion to break his mind.

[–] Squirrel@thelemmy.club 7 points 4 months ago

If sexuality is a spectrum, he's definitely not firmly on the hetero end.

Vance is looking to DL party at a log cabin during the convention

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

JD Vance once wrote that he 'convinced myself that I was gay' when he was a kid

And just who is he blaming for that?

Oh yeah, he's gay. Should just man up about it though but he's from the mad at rainbows party.
